The Independent Media Center (IMC) was established in 1999 for the purpose of covering the protests against the WTO in Seattle. Independent media organizations and activists came together to form a web site where their words and footage could displayed, a necessity given the mainstream’s ignorance to the disastrous impacts of so-called "free-trade” agreements.
Today, nearly 150 independent media centers exist, each with their own web site covering local issues, demonstrations and boycotts that receive scant to zero coverage in other media outlets. This serves a crucial role in sustaining and connecting local grassroots political movements.
The Indymedia newswire relies on open publishing, meaning that all readers are encouraged to post their articles, analysis, videos, audio clips and artwork directly to the website.
At almost 10 years old, Indymedia’s pioneering effort in open media is an example of how collaboration among organized citizens can lead to big changes. The civic-minded people everywhere can take heart that the IMC network will grow and continue to offer an alternative to the closed and increasingly consolidated commercial media.

Who is Indy Media, really? Back in 2005, after being visited unexpectedly at my home by two enthusiastic promoters of Indy Media, shadowy figures with fake Illuminati nihilist names like "Eddy Nix," who said they had just visited Uncle Bob (Robert Anton Wilson) in San Francisco the night before, had read all of my Internet postings for several years, and encouraged me to "post, post, post" at IndyMedia, understandably I became suspicious. Knowing something about Robert Anton Wilson and his possible CIA connections, his love of Kerry Thornley, and his possible involvement with the Kennedy assassination (with another "Nix" conection) (see Interview with Robert Anton Wilson, http://www.american-buddha.com/interview.raw.htm), I asked my tech guy to do some research on them. Just now, I went to my American-Buddha bulletin board and did a search for all posts regarding IndyMedia, and strangely, everywhere there was a reference to Indy Media, it had been made INVISIBLE. The text was there, you just couldn't see it. I looked inside the post to see if there was code around the words to make it white, and there was nothing. In one post, I put "Indy Media" in brackets right next to it, leaving the original "invisible on the outside, visible on the inside text" alone, and when I reposted it, the invisibility vanished. I know there's such a thing called "Digital Invisible Ink Toolkit" http://diit.sourceforge.net/doco.html#whatcanbehidden. Is that what they're using? Invisible Ink and spooks kind of go together, don't you think?
What kind of people don't want you to know this information about them? Think about it. They are hackers for major multinational corporations, hacking "free" software for them -- like PHP bulletin board software?
Here is my tech guy's 2005 research:

Tara,
Well, I’ve done some research and uncovered some preliminary information. It would seem that the Indy Media network is hosted (at least in part) by Freespeech.org, which in turn is owned by a nonprofit called "Public Communicators, Inc."
I've found links between Public Communicators and a couple of government agencies such as the National Center for Public Policy Research. http://www.nationalcenter.org/ [a conservative thinktank]

Sure, there's nothing wrong with a group of people joining together for one common cause, but seriously, what's up with all the "collectives"? Let's have a look at the dictionary.
dictionary.com wrote:
col·lec·tive (k-lktv) adj.
1. Assembled or accumulated into a whole.
2. Of, relating to, characteristic of, or made by a number of people acting as a group: a collective decision.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Law wrote:
Involving all members of a group as distinct from individual members.
WordNet ® 2.0 wrote:
1: done by or characteristic of individuals acting together; "a joint identity"; "the collective mind"; "the corporate good" [syn: corporate] 2: forming a whole or aggregate [ant: distributive] 3: set up on the principle of collectivism or ownership and production by the workers involved usually under the supervision of a government; "collective farms" n : members of a cooperative enterprise
The previous definitions reinforce my personal perceptions of the word "collective". In comparison to its synonyms, "collective" imparts a sense of group-mindedness, reducing the individual members of the group to merely cogs in the machine. An individual has no voice -- the collective speaks only as one.

Look at how progressive media gets taken over by people with CIA connections. Like "The Nation," now owned by Katrina vanden Heuvel, daughter of William J. vanden Heuvel (colleague of CIA Wild Bill Donovan), employer of the infamous Eric Alterman.
http://www.naderlibrary.com/mondo.getsirius.htm
Or how about CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) getting taken over by the Republicans and National Center for Public Policy Research (the same group having links to IndyMedia). They hailed Karl Rove as a leader of the civil rights movement in 2005:
| Quote: | What is CORE
From the files of GM Watch www.gmwatch.org
Congress of Racial Equality - CORE
CORE is an African American group that played a leading role in the American civil rights movement. CORE was among the pioneers of the use of nonviolent direct action as a means of challenging segregation, including sit-ins, jail-ins, and freedom rides. However, during the 1970s CORE all but collapsed and the remnant was taken over by Roy Innis who moved the organisation to the Republican right.
His son, Niger, currently serves as CORE's National Spokesman. CORE's press release for the Greenpeace protest quoted him as saying, 'The carnage has got to end. People should be ashamed to support these fanatics and the eco-manslaughter they are perpetrating on the world's most destitute people. Today's protest is just the first step in bringing justice to the Third World.'
In September 2003 CORE - the Congress of Racial Equality was among groups, including the Competitive Enterprise Institute , taking part in pro-GM protests during the WTO summit in Cancun, Mexico.
A few months earlier, in May 2003, CORE was reported as planning a protest against Greenpeace, alleging that the environmental group had committed 'eco-manslaughter' through the impact of its policies on the developing world. Greenpeace's 'opposition to genetically modified foods' was listed by CORE as among the ways by which 'these zealots' cause 'misery and death'.
In late January 2004 CORE organised a 'Teach-In' in New York entitled, 'Eco-Imperialism: The global green movement's war on the developing world's poor'. Contributors included Patrick Moore, CS Prakash, and Roger Bate. In a press release CORE's Niger Innis, another contributor, said that after the Teach-In 'eco-imperialism' would be a household word, adding, 'We intend to stop this callous eco-manslaughter'.
Another contributor was Paul Driessen of the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise (CDFE) , the Godfather among lobby groups attacking the environmental movement. CDFE are also behind The Economic Human Rights Project, descibed as 'an initiative of the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, in cooperation with the Congress of Racial Equality', and as a 'growing coalition... dedicated to correcting prevalent environmental myths and misguided policies that help perpetuate poverty, misery, disease and early death in developing countries.'
Niger Innis also serves as an Advisory Committee member for Project 21 an initiative of the National Center for Public Policy Research - a conservative/free market foundation with a strongly anti-environmental agenda.
Black American journalists Glen Ford and Peter Gamble describe Project 21 as a 'Black front group' and 'a network and nursery for aspiring rightwing operatives'. They are equally scathing about CORE - 'a tin cup outstretched to every Hard Right political campaign or cause that finds it convenient - or a sick joke - to hire Black cheerleaders'. They report how James Farmer, the former head of the original Congress of Racial Equality confronted Roy Innis on TV for turning 'the organization into what Farmer called a "shakedown" gang.' Ford and Gamble describe Innis as They describe Innis as a 'gangster "civil rights" caricature'.
Dr. Herschelle S. Challenor, Professor at Clark Atlanta University, in an address on Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement in January 2000, drew a sharp contrast between the character of Farmer, CORE's original leader, and his successor, Roy Innis: 'James Farmer, the leader of CORE during the highpoint of the civil rights movement, was a bright, dedicated activist of unimpeachable integrity. His immediate successor, Roy Innis was seen as a chameleon prepared to change his political ideology as necessary. There were rumors that he worked in later years as an FBI informant.'
Niger Innis is no stranger to 'counter protest'. The Competitive Enterprise Institute noted the involvement of Innis in reporting a counter protest outside an ExxonMobil shareholder meeting in Dallas: '...faced with the unexpected numbers of free market demonstrators the anti-corporate protestors finally left. "I think we rattled them. They're packing up their bags and they're leaving," said Niger Innis of the Congress on Racial Equality, one of the groups conducting a counter-demonstration. "Victory is sweet." ' |

No pictures. People are birds at Riseup.net. Snow Owl (Bilderbergers/Illuminati worship owls (goddess)) "built up the technical infrastructure for Indymedia, but now just contributes by maintaining some small pieces." Are the other birds cover for the owl?
Why are these key people behind IndyMedia hiding their identities? Like Fezzik told Inigo in "The Princess Bride," -- "People in Masks cannot be trusted."
| Quote: | About Riseup.net
Meet the Collective
Riseup's Purpose
Meet the Collective
Arara (Ara macao)
Arara is a young geek from Southern America. His interests range from applied math, computing theory, programming, free software and hacking in general to collaboration, virtual and real self-managed communities, politics, economy, social movements, anarchist theory and how the hell we are going to get the world out of this shithole it is in right now.
Blue-footed Booby (Sula nebouxii)
Blue-footed booby is just like Tufted Puffin, but less hardcore about everything.
Gadfly Petrel (Pterodroma)
Gadfly Petrel works to bring about communications policies and systems that are based on human needs not corporate profits. She's a grad student working her masters degree in Communication Studies and Social Justice. She thinks that there is no technical solution but that technology can be useful if used in moderation. Other interests include cooperative living, urban gardening and Captain Beefheart. She's also a firm believer in mutual aid and loves jokes about pirates.
Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus)
Roadrunner is a large, long-legged, ground foraging bird in the cuckoo family. Originally indigenous to the North American Southwest, this specimen is currently enjoying being out of the desert and soaking up the moisture of Cascadia. He spends days as an undercover anarchist hacking on free software for a large multinational corporation, dreaming of one day being free. Roadrunner helps to herd the vast flock of riseup server hardware and waters the network to help it grow.
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)
Although deeply critical of technology, House Sparrow spent seven years in the riseup collective in a quixotic attempt to use technology for liberation, losing feathers and sleep along the way. Sparrow is now beak-deep in books, studying social movements in graduate school.
Snow Owl (Bubo scandiacus)
The Snow Owl sits perched high on a icy branch, peering from afar at the insides of Riseup machines to find little bugs to snack on. He helped start Riseup when living in Seattle because he was dismayed by all the activists who showed up to shut down the WTO with their hotmail and yahoo accounts. No longer living in Seattle he works hard remotely keeping Riseup servers running, the network fast, and the spam from polluting your inbox. During the day he works at running a cooperative, occasionally reading and writing books, and sometimes winning strange and puzzling awards. He spent a lot of time building up the technical infrastructure for Indymedia, but now just contributes by maintaining some small pieces. He spends too much time in front of the computer, sadly.
Sunbird (Nectarinia asiatica)
Sunbird has called the pacific northwest home since 1998, but is presently living abroad in Lahore, Pakistan where he is studying Urdu and volunteering for the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. For his day job, he is a legal worker focused on protecting the rights of immigrants and refugees. Sunbird also has a strong interest in internet law as it relates to privacy and freedom of expression. He joined the riseup collective because it is essential for activists to have communication tools that we can trust. You may find Sunbird on IRC, answering your help tickets, struggling to learn Debian and dreaming about a future free of AOL.
Tucán Piquiverde (Ramphastos sulfuratus)
Like a tucan On the highest tree I shall leave my enemies Way down below me My enemies Who gather together Who spread vile gossip about me Who enrage me I fly with the wind And show them Nothing but the tips of my feet Beaten, thy fall back I let my enimies disappear Like an anaconda Which devours everyone I am Tucan I shout "cuan", "cuan" Way down below me My enemies disappear High above everyone else I sit in a bare tree My hair fluttering in the wind Like flickering flames Bright, so bright No one can reach me No words can do me any harm
Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata)
Tufted Puffin is medium sized sea bird and a member of the riseup collective. She nests in Seattle, which is pretty far south for a tufted puffin. Tufted Puffin spends much of her time in front of a computer, using flashy interfaces like pine, but she likes to go outside too. She gets around by biking or swimming with wings which have adapted to offer her a flying technique while underwater. Tufted Puffin appreciates learning tech skills from riseup and other radical tech projects and, more importantly, helping to build alternative infrastructures.
Riseup's Purpose
The Riseup Collective is an autonomous body based in Seattle with collective members world wide. Our purpose is to aid in the creation of a free society, a world with freedom from want and freedom of expression, a world without oppression or hierarchy, where power is shared equally. We do this by providing communication and computer resources to allies engaged in struggles against capitalism and other forms of oppression.
We value, support, and engage in struggles for human liberation, the ethical treatment of animals, and ecological sustainability. We join in the fight for freedom and the self-determination of all oppressed groups. We oppose all forms of prejudice, authoritarianism, and vanguardism.
We organize on the basis of autonomy, mutual aid, resource sharing, participatory knowledge, social advocacy, anti-oppression work, community creation, and secure communication.
We work to create revolution and a free society in the here and now by building alternative communication infrastructure designed to oppose and replace the dominant system.
We promote social ownership and democratic control over information, ideas, technology, and the means of communication.
We empower organizations and individuals to use technology in struggles for liberation. We work to support each other in overcoming the systemic oppression embedded in the use and development of technology. |

Or maybe this guy:
"Project Democracy's Program -- The Fascist Corporate State, by Webster Griffin Tarpleyhttp://www.naderlibrary.com/democ.projdemocprogfascistcorportarpley.htm
| Webster Griffin Tarpley wrote: | Despite the fact that Stalin deliberately helped bring Hitler and the Nazis to power, despite the Nazi-Communist alliance of 1939-41 under the Hitler- Stalin Pact, despite Mussolini's close ties to Moscow, despite the deep affinity between Nazi-fascists and communists demonstrated repeatedly in many countries by mass exchanges of membership between political organizations of the two persuasions, the average American still sees communism and Nazism-fascism as polar opposites. The expression "fascist" exists only as a strongly derogatory but very vague epithet, empty of any precise political content.
In reality, Bolshevism and fascism, Bukharin and D'Annunzio, are products of the Capri School, Siamese twins conceived in the Isle of Capri's Grotto of Matromania by Venetian and Benedictine cultural- political gamemasters. This can be shown by briefly examining Nazi- communist ideology and economics. But in addition to ideology and economics, there exist specifically Nazi-communist, totalitarian institutional forms which can be objectively identified. A review of the institutions of the corporate state as exemplified by D'Annunzio, Mussolini, and Bukharin is an excellent preparation for recognizing the corporate state in present-day Israel, and for discerning the outlines of the ongoing Trilateral-Project Democracy fascist transformation of the United States.
Nazi-communism is 20th-century totalitarianism. |

| Red Star, by Wikipedia wrote: | The five-pointed red star, a pentagram without the inner pentagon, is a symbol of communism as well as broader socialism in general. It is sometimes understood to represent the five fingers of the worker's hand, as well as the five continents. A lesser known suggestion is that the five points on the star were intended to represent the five social groups that would lead Russia to communism: the youth, the military, the industrial labourers, the agricultural workers or peasantry, and the intelligentsia. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used the red star as a symbol[citation needed]. It was also one of the emblems, symbols, and signals representing the Soviet Union under the rule and guidance of the Communist Party, along with the hammer and sickle. The star has since become a symbol representing socialism of all varieties.
History
Red star on the Soviet Union flag. The five pointed star is an ancient symbol used in the mystical traditions of Middle Eastern religions (Judaism and Christianity) to represent the heretical idea that the sacred inheres in humanity[citation needed]. It was for this reason that Marx and Engels, as radical humanists, were attracted to the symbol. They made it red to signify the blood lost in struggle, and to show that all humans have the same blood (ancestry) regardless of race, gender, or class. However its origins in a mass political movement are found in the Russian civil war and the end of the First World War, though the creator (if any) is unknown. It is most often thought that Russian troops fleeing from the Austrian and German fronts found themselves in Moscow in 1917 and mixed with the local Moscow garrison. To distinguish the Moscow troops from the influx of retreating Russians the officers gave out tin stars to the Moscow garrison soldiers, to wear on their hats. When those troops joined the Red Army and the Bolsheviks they painted their tin stars red, the color of socialism, thus creating the original red star.[1] Another claimed origin for the red star relates to an alleged encounter between Leon Trotsky and Nikolai Krylenko. Krylenko, an Esperantist, was wearing a green star lapel badge; Trotsky enquired as to its meaning and received an explanation that each arm of the star represented one of the five traditional continents. On hearing this, he specified that a similar red star should be worn by soldiers of the Red Army.[2]
Wider use
The ceiling of China's Great Hall of the People.Following its adoption as an emblem of the Soviet Union, the red star became a symbol for communism in a larger sense. The symbol became one of the most prominent of the Soviet Union, adorning all official buildings, awards and insignia. Sometimes the hammer and sickle was depicted inside or below the star. In 1930, the Order of the Red Star was established and given to Red Army and Soviet Navy personnel for "exceptional service in the cause of the defense of the Soviet Union in both war and peace." Its use quickly spread to other Communist states and organisations.
The red star was adopted by several Communist states and often placed on their respective flags and coats of arms; for example, on the flag of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Separatist and socialist movements also sometimes adopted the red star, such as the Estelada flag in the Catalan countries.
Coat of arms of North Korea. As the red star spread to communism in the East, it was adapted: while some states kept the star as it was, some used a yellow star, particularly on a red field, with the same symbolism. The Far Eastern Republic used a yellow star on its military uniforms, and the flag of the People's Republic of China has five yellow stars on a red field. In Korea, however, the red star remained as it was.
Recent uses
The Russian military continues to use the Red Star to this day, and many former Soviet Union member nations still have it on military equipment and uniforms. The Russian military newspaper is also called the Red Star (Russian Krasnaya Zvezda). Several sporting clubs from countries ruled by Communist Parties used the red star as a symbol, and Crvena zvezda (Serbian: Црвена звезда), Belgrade, and Roter Stern, Leipzig, named themselves after it. Since the fall of the Soviet bloc, the red star has been banned in some countries (e.g. in Hungary, it is a criminal offense to publicly show or use the symbol).[3]
Symbol of the Red Army Faction. In 1970, the Rote Armee Fraktion or Red Army Faction (RAF) was officially founded. The RAF, which described itself as a communist "urban guerilla" group, was postwar West Germany's most active and most popular left-wing terrorist organisation. Its highly recognisable symbol was a red star and a Heckler & Koch MP5. The RAF operated from the 1970s to 1998, committing numerous crimes, especially in the autumn of 1977, which led to a national crisis that became known as "German Autumn". It was responsible for 34 murders—including secondary targets such as chauffeurs and bodyguards—and many injuries in its almost 30 years of existence.
Flag of the EZLN.The red star was included in the flag of the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) or Zapatista Army of National Liberation upon their formation in 1994. The EZLN, an armed revolutionary group based in Chiapas, Mexico, takes its name from the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata and is most often represented by Subcomandante Marcos, though he is not their leader. The same flag, a black flag with a red star, was used by American revolutionary socialist rock band Rage Against the Machine - who were vocal supporters of the EZLN and other socialist causes - so much so that the symbol came to be associated with the band, separate from the EZLN. The red star is used by the Workers' Party (Brazil). It is also used by the militant South African shack dweller's movement Abahlali baseMjondolo.
The proposed PSUV logo.Hugo Chávez and his supporters in Venezuela have used the Red Star in numerous symbols and logos, and have proposed including it in logo of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela PSUV, it was also used throughout 2007 as a symbol of the "5 Engines of the Bolivarian Socialist Revolution".
Currently, both Heineken and Macy's use the red star as part of their respective corporate logos.
Legal status
In countries that were formerly within the Soviet Union's sphere of influence, the Red Star and the Hammer and Sickle are regarded by some citizens as occupation symbols. Accordingly, Latvia, the Republic of Hungary[3] and Lithuania[4] banned the symbols' public usage. A similar law was considered in Republic of Estonia, but eventually failed in a parliamentary committee as too onerous for constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, most importantly, freedom of speech. European Court of Human Rights has ruled, in the same manner, against the laws that ban this symbol, which are in clear opposition with basic human rights, such as freedom of speech. [5] |

| Quote: | Red flag, by Wikipedia
The plain red flag is often used at communist, anarchist, or democratic socialist rallies, especially on May Day. Red flags can signify a warning, martial law, defiance, or left-wing politics. The earliest citation for "red flag" in the Oxford English Dictionary is from 1602 and shows that at that time the flag was used by military forces to indicate that they were preparing for battle.[1] It has been associated with left-wing politics since the French Revolution.[2] The red flag became a symbol of communism as a result of its use by the Paris Commune of 1871.[3] The flags of several communist states, including China, Vietnam, and the former Soviet Union, have red backgrounds. The Labour Party in Britain used it until the 1980s and the French Socialist Party uses it. The earliest citation of "red flag" in the sense of a warning is dated 1777 and refers to a flag warning of flood.[4]
History
"Lamartine, before the Hôtel de Ville, rejects the Red Flag," February 25, 1848. By Henri Felix Emmanuel Philippoteaux (1815–1884). The red flag represents terror, blood, and a "party's republic," Lamartine told the crowd. As early as the 15th century, the red flag was used as a "flag of defiance."[5] It was raised in cities and castles under siege to indicate that they would not surrender.[6] "The red flag is a signal of defiance and battle," according to Chambers Cyclopedia (1727–41).[7]
The color red become associated with patriotism early in the French Revolution due to the popularity of the Phrygian cap and designs based on the Tricolor Flag, both introduced in 1790. A red flag was raised over the Champ-de-Mars in Paris on July 17, 1791 by Mayor Jean-Sylvain Bailly as a symbol of martial law, warning rioters to disperse.[8] Over fifty anti-royalist protesters were killed in the fighting that followed. Oddly inverting the original symbolism, the Jacobins protested this action by flying a red flag to honor the "martyrs' blood" of those who had been killed.[9] The Jacobin Club ruled France during the Reign of Terror (1793-94) and made the Red Flag an unofficial national flag.[2] However, the earlier Tricolor flag never lost its official status and regained popularity under Napoleon.
The flag of the Soviet Union, adopted in 1923. This version was used until 1955, when the flag was modified slightly. The flag lost official status in 1991, when the Soviet Union broke up. British sailors mutinied near the mouth of the River Thames in 1797 and hoisted a red flag on several ships. The flag was also used during the Merthyr riots of 1831 in South Wales.[3] During the 1848 Revolution, Socialists and radical republicans demanded that the red flag be adopted as France's national flag. Led by poet-politician Alphonse de Lamartine, the government rejected the mob's demand: "[T]he red flag that you have brought back here has done nothing but being trailed around the Champ-de-Mars in the people's blood in [17]91 and [17]93, whereas the Tricolore flag went round the world along with the name, the glory and the liberty of the homeland!"[10]
The banner of the Paris Commune of 1871 was red and it was at this time that the red flag became a symbol of the left.[3] The flag was flown at a rally in Chicago on May Day 1886, which resulted in the execution of some of the Haymarket Eight. The red flag gained great popularity during the Russian Revolution of 1917.[11] The Soviet flag, with a hammer, a sickle and a star on a red background, was adopted in 1923.[11] Various Communist and socialist newspapers have used the name The Red Flag. The red flag, and the color red generally, was adopted by the Communist Party in China, where red is associated with good luck.
In more recent times, social democratic parties have gravitated away from the Red Flag as a symbol. However, several European parties retain a "red square" symbol, including Germany's SPD and the Party of European Socialists.
The British Labour Party
The red flag was the emblem of the British Labour Party from its inception until the Labour Party Conference of 1986 when it was replaced by a red rose. The red rose has subsequently been adopted by a number of other socialist and social-democratic parties throughout Europe. Members of the party also sing the traditional anthem The Red Flag (see below) at the conclusion of the annual party conference. In February 2006 the Red Flag was sung in Parliament to mark the centenary of the Labour Party's founding.
Laws to ban red flags
During the First Red Scare in the United States, many U.S. states passed laws forbidding the flying of red flags, including Minnesota, South Dakota, and Oklahoma. Most of these statutes have been repealed by state legislatures, but an Oklahoma statute still provides that flying "any red flag or other emblem or banner, indicating disloyalty to the Government of the United States or a belief in anarchy or other political doctrines or beliefs, whose objects are either the disruption or destruction of organized government, or the defiance of the laws of the United States or of the State of Oklahoma" is a felony with a possible 10 year prison sentence and a $1,000 fine. The constitutionality of this statute is in question but has not been tested in the courts to date.
The song "The Red Flag"
The song "The Red Flag" was written by Irishman Jim Connell in 1889. It is normally sung to the tune of the German carol O Tannenbaum, though Connell had wanted it sung to the tune of a pro-Jacobite Robert Burns anthem, "The White Cockade". The lyrics of the first verse and the chorus, which are the most well-known parts of the song, are as follows:
The people's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyr'd dead
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts' blood dyed its ev'ry fold.
Then raise the scarlet standard high,
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.[12]
There are a number of satirical versions of the song, such as "The People's Flag is Palest Pink". In 2006, Canadian alternative rock band Billy Talent released a song entitled Red Flag.
Other uses of red flags
"Waving a red flag" is a metaphor for incitement; the metaphor comes from the sport of bullfighting, in which the matador provokes the bull by waving a red cape at it. A signal of danger or a problem can be referred to as a red flag, a usage that originated in the 18th century. In many countries a red flag is flown to signify that an outdoor shooting range is in use. The United States Air Force refers to its largest annual exercise as Operation Red Flag. Red flags are used for various signals in team sailing races (see Racing Rules of Sailing). |

| The Red Ensign, by Wikipedia wrote: | The Red Ensign or "Red Duster" is a flag that originated in the early 17th century as an ensign flown by the Royal Navy. The precise date of its first appearance is not known, but surviving receipts indicate that the Navy was paying to have such flags sewn during the 1620s. It is currently used as the civil ensign of the United Kingdom.
History
In 1674, a Royal Proclamation of Charles II confirmed that the Red Ensign was the appropriate flag to be worn by English merchant ships. The wording of the 1674 proclamation indicates that the flag was customarily being used by English merchantmen before that date. At this time, the ensign displayed the English Cross of St George in the canton. The Red Ensign was also flown by ships of the Royal Scots Navy, with a Saltire in the canton.
The British Red Ensign (1707–1801)
English Red Ensign as it appeared in the seventeenth century.
The Scottish Red Ensign, flown by ships of the Royal Scots NavyIn 1707, Acts of Union, ratifying the Treaty of Union that had been agreed the previous year, were passed by the parliaments of England and Scotland, thereby uniting the Kingdom of Scotland with the Kingdom of England (which included the Principality of Wales) in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. This resulted in a new red ensign which placed the first Union Flag in the first quarter. The new design of the Red Ensign was proclaimed by Queen Anne, who indicated that it was to be used by both the navy and ships owned by "our loving subjects." This was the flag that flew over the thirteen American colonies before the American Revolution and was a precursor to the flag of the United States.
In 1801, with another Act of Union, Ireland joined the United Kingdom, which resulted in the present Union Flag being added to the canton. The St Patrick's Cross was added to the Union Flag of the United Kingdom and, accordingly, to the first quarters of the British ensigns.
In 1854, the Merchant Shipping Act included a specific provision that the Red Ensign was the appropriate flag for a British merchantman. This provision was repeated in successive British shipping legislation (i.e., 1889, 1894 (section 73) and 1995).
Until 1864, the Red Ensign was also the principal ensign of the Royal Navy, and as such it was worn by ships of the Red Squadron of the navy, as well as by those warships that were not assigned to any squadron (i.e., those sailing under independent command). The white ensign and the blue ensign were also used by the Royal Navy.
Many in the Admiralty felt that the Royal Navy's use of three separate ensigns (i.e., the red, white, and blue) was outdated and confusing. Many also felt that steam merchantmen should be clearly distinguishable from warships. In July 1864, an order-in-council provided that the White Ensign was the ensign of the Royal Naval Service. The Blue Ensign was designated as the proper national colours for ships commanded by an officer of the Royal Naval Reserve, and (with an appropriate badge) as national colours for ships in government service. The Red Ensign was assigned to British merchantmen. This basic structure remains today.
A few years later (1867–1869), the Admiralty determined that the blue ensign charged with an appropriate badge in the fly would be used as the ensign by those ships in the armed, or public, service of the many British colonies. Most British colonies needed to use the blue ensign due to the fact that most had government vessels; some colonies, such as South Australia, had warships. As a result, the Blue Ensign was used throughout the Empire and thus became the model for the flags used by a number of colonies and former colonies in the British Empire. At the same time, the red ensign (which was designated in 1864 as the flag for merchant shipping) was used by merchantmen of those colonies which obtained an Admiralty warrant. Not all colonies obtained an Admiralty warrant, however; ones that did tended to be larger, and included Canada (1892); New Zealand (1899); Australia (1901); South Africa (1910) and Cyprus (1922). Those areas that did not have an Admiralty warrant used the plain Red Ensign, although unofficial local versions of the Red Ensign were used.
Today, Red Ensigns charged with the local emblem are available to be used by ships registered on several of the component registers of the Red Ensign Group: Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey and Isle of Man.

Australia
Australian Red Ensign
The British Red Ensign being paraded alongside the Australian Red Ensign during the 2007 Anzac Day celebrations in Brisbane, Australia. The Australian Red Ensign, is a red version of the Australian Flag and is a reserved civil ensign. From 1901 to 1954 the flag was used as a civil flag, to be flown by private citizens on land, while the government used the Blue Ensign reflecting British practice. In 1941, Prime Minister Robert Menzies stated that there should be no restrictions on private citizens using the Blue Ensign on land and, in 1947, Prime Minister Ben Chifley reaffirmed this position but it wasn't until the passage of the Flags Act 1953 that the restriction on civilians flying the Blue Ensign was officially lifted after which use of the Red Ensign on land became a rarity. Under the Navigation and Shipping Act 1912 and the Shipping Registration Act 1981 the Red Ensign remains the only flag permitted for use by merchant ships registered in Australia. Pleasure craft may use either the Red Ensign or the national flag, but not both at the same time.

[Bermuda
Bermuda's Red Ensign
Bermuda, uniquely among British overseas territories, uses the Red Ensign as its land flag, which apparently has been flown unofficially since Bermuda's arms were granted in 1910. (Note, however, that many other British territories use local versions of the Red Ensign at sea). There appears to be no formal adoption of the Bermuda flag for use on land, although a 1969 Foreign & Commonwealth Office circular mentions its use. The white and green shield has a red lion holding a scrolled shield showing the sinking of the ship Sea Venture one mile off the coast of Bermuda in 1609. The ship struck a reef after being caught in a hurricane. The Red Ensign is likely to have been chosen as Bermuda's land flag due to Canadian influence. (In the early twentieth century, Canada made use of the Red Ensign defaced with the Canadian shield as an unofficial land flag). Bermuda's 2002 shipping legislation officially recognizes the flag as an ensign for Bermudian registered ships. Prior to 2002, the flag was often used unofficially by Bermudian ships as an ensign, as reflected in Admiralty correspondence dating back to the 1950s. Bermuda (civil) Government vessels and maritime services, it should be noted, use the defaced blue ensign, which is flown both from vessels and from shore facilities.
Canada
Canadian Red EnsignThe term Red Ensign is often used to refer to the Canadian Red Ensign, the former de facto national flag of Canada. It was informally adopted following Canadian Confederation in 1867 and, from 1892, it was the official flag for use on Canadian merchant ships. On land, however, the official national flag was the Union Flag. Despite its unofficial status, the Red Ensign was widely used on land as well. In 1924, the Red Ensign was approved for use on Canadian government buildings outside Canada, and from 1945 for those inside Canada as well.
Hudson's Bay Company corporate flag
Canada's Red Ensign bore various forms of the shield from the Canadian coat of arms in its fly during the period of its use. The picture shows the official form between 1957 and 1965. Canada also used a blue ensign for ships operated by the Canadian government and for the Royal Canadian Navy.
The Red Ensign served as Canada's national flag until 1965 when, after considerable debate, it was replaced by today's Maple Leaf Flag. The Red Ensign is still popular amongst traditionalists and monarchists and even though the flag is no longer in use nationally, the original provincial versions of the flag, with the coat of arms of the respective provinces in the fly, continue as the official flags of Manitoba and Ontario.
The Hudson's Bay Company also used a Red Ensign as their corporate flag.
See also: Great Flag Debate; see Flag of Manitoba and Flag of Ontario for surviving provincial Red Ensigns.
India
Indian Red Ensign with the Star of India
The flag representing British India was usually the Union Jack with the Star of India. In many International events and International associations the Red Ensign with the Star of India was used to represent India.
[Isle of Man
Isle of Man Red Ensign
The Crown dependency of the Isle of Man has a red ensign for ships registered on the Island.
Newfoundland
Newfoundland Red Ensign
The Red Ensign with the great seal in the fly was Newfoundland's unofficial flag, to be flown by commercial shipping, from 1904 until 1931. The flag was never formally adopted by the national parliament. The badge in the flag consists of Mercury, the God of Commerce and Merchandise, presenting to Britannia a fisherman who, in a kneeling attitude, is offering the harvest of all the sea. Above the device in a scroll are the words Terra Nova, and below the motto Haec Tibi Dona Fero or "These gifts I bring thee." The seal was redesigned by Adelaine Lane, niece of Governor Sir Cavendish Boyle in 1903.
[New Zealand
Example of a Red Ensign used by New Zealand Māori.
New Zealand's Red EnsignThe New Zealand Red Ensign with the Union Flag in the first quarter, and the Southern Cross, represented by four five-pointed white stars featured in the fly became the official flag in New Zealand for merchant vessels in 1901.[1] Previously a plain red ensign was used.
The red ensign may continue to be flown on land in Māori areas or during Māori events under the Flags, Emblems, and Names Protection Act 1981[2] in recognition of long held Māori preference for red flags. New Zealand law allows the defacement of the flag in accordance to Māori custom in which white capital letters identifying a particular family or Māori tribe are added. In the case of the flag on the left, TAKITIMU refers to a grouping of Māori tribes descended from the crew of the ancestral canoe of that name[3].
Today, private and merchant craft can choose to fly the Flag of New Zealand (which is a blue ensign) or the Southern Cross red ensign.
South Africa
Red Ensign of the Union of South Africa as it appeared 1910 - 1928
The Union of South Africa used a Red Ensign as its de facto national flag from 1910 until 1928, with the shield of its coat of arms in the fly. There was also a Blue Ensign which was mostly used on overseas offices.
Both ensigns were changed slightly in 1912 when the shield of the coat of arms was placed on a white roundel. The South African coat of arms that defaced the flag was intended to represent both British and the Boer settlers equally.
The most notable usage of the flag was when General Louis Botha flew the flag over Windhoek in what was then German South West Africa after the town's capture by South African troops in 1915.
The Red Ensign was used in the early years after the creation of the Union of South Africa in the aftermath of the Second Boer War when the pro-British South African Party of Botha and Jan Smuts formed the government. However in 1924, the Afrikaner nationalist National Party first gained power, and the South African Flag Controversy of 1925 to 1928 ensued. The government, led by republican James Barry Munnik Hertzog sponsored a contest to choose a new banner based on the old Prinsevlag horizontal tricolour was chosen in 1927, and became the official flag in 1928.[4]
