MAX ERNST: The picture I was just able to finish in 1939 was called, "A Moment of Calm." It was a great forest, inhabited by birds and animals of every conceivable kind. In this picture, the threat facing the world at the time was very, very clearly present. "A Moment of Calm." The accent lay on "Moment," because in fact we had only a few moments left in which to make new decisions.
